About Greg

Greg Lavell is a Melbourne-based theatre director, playwright, composer, pianist, teacher, and improviser.

His work encompasses theatre, musical theatre, cabaret, and improvised music and theatre. He recently received a pretigious Green Room award for ‘Outstanding Musical Direction’ for his work in his improvised musical comedy Cabaret Unscripted.

In 2022, Greg founded Melbourne Unscripted, a new theatre company built on the desire to explore improvisation in theatre and music through working wth exceptional Melbourne-based performing improvisers.

As Artistic Director, he leads a talented team of improvisers in creating captivating and accessible improv theatre. The company offers improv classes for all levels, as well as coaching for improv teams and private students in improv and musical improv. 

In addition to his work with Melbourne Unscripted, Greg is an experienced arranger, composer, and accompanist for cabaret and musical theatre works, and in 2020, wrote and composed and staged his first musical “Kiss”.

Greg is passionate about creating new work, collaborating on new projects, and helping writers and improvisers develop their creative voice. He continues to teach and collaborate alongside his own creative projects.

Greg lives with his very talented artist partner, Sheng Yi Lee, in the inner east of Melbourne.
